The story behind StoryCodex

I'm an avid reader of many different genres, though primarily Sci-fi related to aliens, space ships, space battles, and colonization. A few years ago, I stumbled upon LitRPG and have been hooked ever since. I enjoy when Sci-fi merges with fantasy, and when it's combined with gaming mechanics, it becomes a real interest.

I’ve been writing my own stories for years (nothing published or released yet), and earlier this year, I began a new LitRPG series. I am happy to say that I’ve made some progress. Through this experience, though, I learned that managing character progression data was quite a lot of work!

I started off using Microsoft Excel to track progressions, stat point assignments, etc. I had a sheet for each progression and the automations in place to perform the calculations. Each time my characters progressed, I’d copy a sheet to a new one and make adjustments. It was not a sustainable solution. At first, it seemed to work, but as I got further along in the book, and new ideas cropped up (alas, scope creep is a thing!), as they tend to do, and some of the ideas I wanted to incorporate affected earlier progressions and required me to go back and adjust values and even rework entire sheets. It was painful. So, as a software engineer with over 25 years of experience, I decided to make a simple app to help me keep track of this information and do the calculations for me. Of course, I wanted to make it flexible so that when I had new ideas, like characters having more than 2 classes, it would just work. So, the writing took a back seat for a bit while I built out a system. Along the way, I thought, Maybe other writers could use this too!

And that is how StoryCodex came to be. Some of the design considerations I have made might not work for you out of the box, but I invite you to create an account and see what it offers, and if you can make it work for you.
